Currently my work consists of small ‘undulating’ intensely coloured, two-dimensional machine-embroidered pieces, stitched to perspex.
The textile medium is essentially slow - a building up and complex combining of shapes. I work from a store of images kept in my sketch-books, developing the ideas through more drawing and sometimes paper collage.
In contrast the very large-scale banner and mural workshops I am currently offering to Primary Schools are fast and lively. Both of these delight in the exploration of colour and pattern.
Inspiration for my own work comes from many sources, but the world’s patterns, nature’s elegant repeated forms, primitive art and calligraphy all play their part. Colour is my all-important reason for preferring the textile medium, as it is so much more vibrant than paint. Inspiration for the children’s banner workshops comes from the magic of their art-work.
